  • Preconception Nutrition

In the past week, I've gotten some pretty exciting stuff in the mail. Want to see?
The little lipstick tube along the bottom is a saliva-based ovulation monitor. Wake up in the morning, put some saliva on it, let it dry, and then look into the microscope to see if there is a fern-like pattern. It took seven months to get pregnant with Becca. We are not screwing around (no pun intended) this time. I also have a BBT thermometer, but I forgot to include it in the picture.

We're starting now. Actually, a little over two weeks from now, as I just started this cycle today. And while I have been taking vitamins regularly for the past month or so, now I am really focusing on eating the very best that I can. Which at this point means eating to improve my fertility. And also things that I cannot eat once I get pregnant. like hot dogs and cold cuts. Which I had forgotten all about until this morning.

The best foods for fertility are fruits and vegetables. Apples, peaches, carrots, and so forth. Lots of bright colors and leafy greens. Peanut butter and yogurt are good. And I have heard that honey and raspberry leaf tea can improve your chances of getting pregnant. I seem to remember a study saying that ice cream was a great way to boost your fertility. I think it had to do with the high dairy fat content. Or something. Sounds like a good excuse to pick up a half gallon of something sweet and yummy, anyhow. And that is good enough for me.

This is basically turning into a really good reason for us to jump start our healthy eating goals. We have been slowly inching our way towards better nutrition, but now it is time to kick it into high gear. This is made much easier by the fact that the supermarkets finally have decent produce (Yay warm weather!). Over the next several months, we will be eating a lot of produce, and hopefully the new habits will stick.

I know that it might take months to actually get pregnant. I'm trying not to jump the gun. But I am just so excited to finally be trying. And hopefully, this run of TTC is short lived, so that I can get right into the fun of morning sickness and not being able to eat chocolate (made me sick last time.) But at least I am prepared this time.

  • My First Day with a Digital Camera

It's been a while, huh? I've been busy with work, writing, and trying to keep the house somewhat clean. As it turns out, May is a much better month than April. We got our taxes back last week, and the van is half fixed. Turns out we needed new brakes. All four of them. The front is done, and we're making an appointment for the rear.

The big thing is that I finally have a digital camera. Which means I can now post all sorts of pictures. Like these:

Those were all taken today. And I can post them without stealing them from my sisters' Myspace or Facebook pages. Which is something that I've been waiting to do since I started blogging.

Becca is going through another teething phase, which means she has been cuddling one minute and throwing a tantrum the next. She hasn't been sleeping very well, which means I haven't been sleeping very well, either. But I think we are through the worst of it finally. Right now, she is cuddling though. So I'm going to get off of the computer for a bit and enjoy it.

  • A Day at the Park (With Pictures!)

Becca enjoyed the park last year, even though all she could really do was swing and play on the little creatures that rock back and forth.

This year, though, she loves the park. She can run all over the place (a nice change when you are typically stuck in a smallish apartment most days. She can swing. She can climb. She can go down the slides. So, Sunday, after my birthday breakfast with my dad and step-mom, we all headed to the local park, where we met up with my sister, Shannon. It was an absolutely gorgeous day, so we stayed there for quite a while. Luckily, Shannon brought her camera along, so there are even pictures.

Daddy is a big kid, too.

    Playing in the tubes.

Family Portrait. See the new haircut?

    Family Part Two.

    Say Goodbye!

There are more pictures in my gallery over at Writer Mom at Home, if you want to see them.

In other news, Becca is now 18 months old. As of Monday. How the heck has it been a year and a half already? There will probably be an actual post about that later. I've just been crazy busy this week.

  • Not So Mini Mini-Rant

    ****UPDATE BELOW****

April is the suck. Umm. The month. Not the person (sorry!)

First everyone got a nasty sinus infection (except me). Then the taxes got all screwed up. Then Mark and Becca got pink eye (Becca still has it.) With everyone sick, I have been barely able to work (too busy taking care of them), and the only time I have gotten, I've been exhausted. It's taking me forever to get anything written. Mark took of Friday, because of his eyes, and so we were really short on money to begin with. We would be able to pay rent, but it would be close. Very close.

And now? Now the van is dead. Hurray!!!

We've been having problems with the brake lights staying on. There is some switch stuck way up underneath the dashboard somewhere that gets bent sometimes, I guess. (Did a lot of research this morning). Usually just pulling the brake out extra works. Not yesterday, though. It was bright and sunny, and even though Mark pulled the brake up several times, and checked, we didn't notice that the lights were still on. Until a neighbor told us around 9:00 pm. By that point, Mark couldn't get the van started at all, and couldn't get the lights off. I was in bed with Becca, but I suggested pulling the fuses. No, once the lights are dead there is no more power being drawn from the battery. Didn't really make sense to me, because a dead light bulb anywhere else will draw power still, right? As long as the light switch is on?

My brother showed up this morning with his battery charger. Nothing. So we charged the charger back up, and still nothing. The van will make a few short clicks. That's it. I had one of the guys out back of us check, and he thinks it might be the alternator. I still think it is just the battery and that switch. But we'll see. My dad is coming over this evening to check it out, and to see if he can get it to charge off of his truck. If not, he'll take the battery home and hook it up to his other charger, and we'll try again tomorrow. Hopefully that solves the problem. The last thing we need right now is an expensive repair bill.

Becca had a doctor's appointment today. Sinus issues, complete with ear infection and pink eye. And then they gave her 2 shots and drew some blood. All while she was exhausted and not feeling well. She was awake at 3:00 this morning with her eyes all gooped up, and then was too congested to fall back asleep. Other than a short one hour nap around 8:00 this morning, she had been awake all day. And now, to top things off, I'm getting sick too.

My mother in law wants to send Mark and I out to eat (she's paying) tonight, while she watches Becca, but with Becca sick, and now me getting sick, I don't feel like going anywhere. And my dad is supposed to be trying to come over. Mark still wants to go out, but I think we're just going to stay here. Maybe order take-out. We were kinda craving Chinese food anyhow. We might walk down to the video place and rent a movie or two even. I would not at all mind a quiet night at home, as long as nothing interferes with House tonight. Supposed to be a great episode.

Can I add the fact that they killed off Kutner to my rant? I know this has been discussed elsewhere, but Kal Penn really made that show special. Kutner was my favorite of the three new doctors.

April is almost over. We're hoping that May is better.

    ****UPDATE****

The van is running again, as of last night. We're hoping that it stays that way. My dad is going to ask his next-door neighbor for advice. The guy is a mechanic, and has worked on the van for us before.

One problem down, another problem popping up. Or bubbling up, more accurately. I went to hop in the shower about an hour ago only to find that the bottom of the shower was covered in sewage. Eww. There is dirty water coming up now, and it is threatening to spill onto the floor. Pretty gross. Landlord is sending someone over to check into it, but REALLY???

Two days to go until the end of April, and fate is pulling out all of the stops.

  • Happy Birthday to Me!

I turned 25 today. I have done nothing exciting today, and will probably be working late tonight to make up for a day of slacking off. Yippee!

Last night, my dad, step-mom (Sheila), sister, and step-sister came over with cake and ice cream. Tomorrow, I am meeting my mom and another sister for breakfast at a local diner. Saturday, I'm getting my hair chopped off, and Sunday I am going out for breakfast with Dad and Sheila. And then we're meeting my sister to go to the park. I wrote a long "taking stock of my life" sort of blog over at Writer Mom at Home, if you'd like to check it out.

Ironically, the first person to wish me a happy birthday this morning was a very nice woman over at the IRS. I made a dumb mistake on the direct deposit portion of our taxes, so I've been on the phone a lot recently. H&R block sucks. I did our taxes through turbo tax, but had the funds deposited onto our Emerald Card. After I stopped working, we didn't use my checking account anymore, so I closed it out. I get all of my pay deposited onto the card, and it works great. No problems with it. Except that when I went to do the taxes, I couldn't find my account number. Anywhere. Not even on last year's tax forms. So I assumed (wrongfully) that the card number must be it, because it was the number I was using for everything else. Hahaha. Yeah. Took us almost a week to figure this out. Luckily, there is no real account with that number, so it was sent back to the IRS. Who, once they get it through their system, will be sending us a check. Assuming nothing else goes wrong.

Needless to say, Mark was not pleased with me. In my defense, however, I am definitely not the only person who made this mistake. I found a lot of people who did the same thing. And it took him 3 calls to H&R Block to get our account number, so it's not like they're making it easy.

So, I went out yesterday and got a real checking account. And savings account. So now, when we get the check, I'll be able to deposit it. And eventually, hopefully, we will get the new furniture we've been planning on. I still have to call up the state, and get it taken care of there. Ugh. At least this won't be an issue next year.

Mark and I won't be doing anything for my birthday until we get money back, but then we are going out to the Olive Garden. I've never been, so it's going to be a very special treat. I'll also be getting some spending money, which will probably be going towards clothes.

Assuming we ever get the money. I'm not trying to plan too much until we actually have it in the bank account. I'm still half convinced that it's going to get lost somewhere or something. That's just the sort of luck we've been having with all of this. There has been a lot of knocking on wood around here, and we are afraid to even talk about what we want to get. Call us superstitious, but we aren't taking any chances....
